After spending more than a month out of Dubai, I am surprised how things have changed when I came back:
1. New toll gates installed in various parts of the city.
Motorists are avoiding the toll gates by diverting their routes to small roads, creating lots of traffic! If I have to, I’d rather pay a dollar (the toll fee, one way) than stress in traffic. Luckily, I don’t have to pass any Salik (toll) installed roads on my way to work.
2. The holy month of Ramadan started.
Ramadan started on the 1st September and it will end at the sighting of the new moon, estimated on the 30th. Until then, it is shortened working time for us!
3. School started, too.
Although there had been lots of buzz that it will start only after Ramadan. Pristine is a week late but so are half of her classmates!
4. Tall buildings suddenly got taller.
The Burj Dubai, world’s tallest building (currently under construction) rises to more than 700 meters. Nearby Dubai Mall is almost finished!
5. Schools got bigger, too.
My daughter’s KG1 and KG2 area has expanded to twice the original size (there are now 4 classes each instead of 2 last school year)
6. My daughter’s school makes another change.
They have changed the uniforms again! Which means we have to buy again though we have bought a new uniform last semester. This is the third time they changed the uniform – they can’t make up their mind!!
7. Tuition fees rose – again.
The tuition fees have increased 5% from last year’s. Schools here increase fees every year and I have been told I am lucky to only pay 5% more. A neighbor is crying over 20% tuition fee increase!
8. Heat has mellowed.
The temperature in Dubai is down to 38C maximum from 45C.
9. Japan has cooled down, too.
According to hubby who is still detained there for work
10. It’s definitely baby boom this year.
I left for a month and when I came back? Two of my work colleagues are pregnant!
11. Baby boom not just for humans.
Even my sister’s dog gave birth to 6 puppies! I wish Pristine was there to see the pups!
12. New hotel apartment on the block is finished.
When I left, that corner of the street was covered with very dusty gray screen and now, voila!
*sorry for the blurry picture…it was so hazy outside and my camera lens fogged due to very high humidity!*
13. Mailbox choked to death.
My mailbox at work reached it’s maximum capacity. I have over a thousand mail to sort out and none of them are spam!

What a great thing to blog about. I recently went back to the college I graduated from (years ago) and it’s so different! There are more buildings, different restaurants–it was a little mind blowing. Happy TT!

Woa, I love that apartment! Have you ever seen Positano, Italy? There is a hillside with all sorts of small villas sticking out here and there and that apartment sort of has that look, but in a modern way. Very neat!
I’m liking this post.
The worst part of going away is dealing with mail. It would be better if it was more spam than legitimate mail, no?
Wow! ALOT of changes in a month. Life is amazing & sounds very interesting in your neck of the woods! Happy TT.

Wow, that’s actually quite a bit of changes. I’ve been away from the US for three months, I wonder what I will find when I return…

Seems like everything’s going up. They say what goes up also comes down. But most of it doesn’t.

Sounds like life has gotten crazy for you and just after your holiday, but at least the heat isn’t as intense. School fees and the cost of uniforms drive me nuts…my girls are forever losing items and the fees really eat at my income. This is a public school too, not private.
Down to 38? Hopefully relief is around the corner. We’re down to about 32 already here.

It can be very disorienting when things change at a rapid pace and you haven’t been around to see it. It could give you a headache!

It’s nice to get away, but hard to go back. The changes always throw you for a loop.
Happy TT!
