Web host: Finding the right one

Web hosting is a service that allows you to put your website (domain name) on the internet so that people can see you. After taking the step of deciding a name for your website and registering the domain name, the next important step is to find a web hosting service from a web hosting provider.

  • Search, search, search! – you can find a good web host which will offer the features you require in its cheaper packages. You just need to search.
  • Ask around for opinions from other bloggers – second, third, fourth…and so on opinions does matter.
  • Review the web hosting company – check the scope of service provided if it matches your needs. Expensive doesn’t necessarily mean efficient.
  • Ask pre-sales questions – See their support team response in action. If they can’t help you before you become a client, don’t expect more.

When searching for a web host, you need to search long and hard. A search with the keywords “web host” in Google will result in hundreds of pages of web hosting providers. So which one is the best?

My search led me to the wordpress.org page where web hosting providers are  suggested to help lessen the confusion. Then I asked bloggers who have travelled this road and made a mini-survey on the web host provider they use.

I am using Bluehost because it is on top of the suggested hosts list…wait, no, I chose Bluehost after reviewing the web hosting package against my personal requirements and only after I tried out how effective their support team is. I asked questions even before signing up and they were always happy to answer.  They have a very hands-on approach to new users, which is all I need.

Bluehost offers great customer support with Live Chat. You can ask any questions and get the answers from very helpful support staff who is available 24/7! So if you are thinking of owning your own domain and looking for a good web hosting provider, signup for Bluehost.

If you are not convinced, Bluehost is also featured in the Top Three Web Hosts of 2007.

What works for one though, may not work for another. Recently dh left Bluehost after they emailed him and gave him 3 days to remove his podcast audio files (A HUGE job to find a new host, move everything, and change all of the feeds)
He hadn’t exceeded bandwidth or anything. He can only guess it’s because when a podcast comes out, there is a spike in downloads (and then nothing for a week) He’s guessing that they didn’t like the spike. Because he never came close to exceeding bandwidth.
They gave him 3 days, and their customer service people were not helpful. He migrated to Burton Hosting who he used for other parts of the podcast (show notes and blog) and he has been very happy with their customer service dept.
So, just a heads up (although since you don’t have a podcast, this may not be an issue for you). :)

I didn’t get to congrats you on the new domain yet, so here I go: CONGRATS!! Isn’t it the greatest thing? :)

My host is E-Starr. And I’m very happy with them. :)

I was with Bluehost at one point and was not happy with them because they have a CPU cap. If your site gets really popular you count on being shutdown.

Thanks, that was helpful – I’ve looked at Bluehost. Only problem with your post re. me is that I have no idea what my requirements are – The features look wonderful, but what does it all mean??? lol.
Was the same with Blogger in the beginning, so I will learn. With all you wonderful people out there to help, I’ll be OK.
Thanks again!

Wordpress has become the most popular used platform in its category. A recent search i conducted on Alexa found wordpress.com to be number 22 in the top most visited websites “globally”.

Wordpress not only makes it easy to create a blog but it has also been used to develop websites, simply because it makes it so easy to update.

Regards,
Richard
