** Today is not yet the 13th of the month..hey, it’s Friday the 13th this coming Friday…I don’t really like going out on Friday the 13th. I am superstitious, just a little…where were we? Oh, I will post this earlier because my blog stats says there’s hardly anyone reading this space on Fridays. So here goes:**

This will be a regular post every 13th of the month (unless I forget!) marking the day we stepped into desert land.
So far after 6 months I learned and discovered that in Dubai…
- Roads are constantly changing. Don’t expect to take the same boring route everyday. Some roads are here today, gone tomorrow.

Diversion roads that play hide and seek on a daily basis!
- Never keep too much distance from the car in front of you. Forget driving lessons learned in peaceful, sane Japan. Too much space in front of you would only lure crazy driver to cut in without blinking their indicators!
- Keep your attention on the car horn as well as on the brakes. Mental drivers are on the loose, 24/7.
- The Dubai now will not be the same Dubai 2 minutes later.
- Even if you are off at 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays, better stay inside the office until it gets dark. This is a very serious advice for people who do not want to burn in midday heat.
- The temperature electronic board up Salahuddin street is usually lower than the real ground temperature by at least 5 degrees. Today it read 40C. Go figure.
- You tell your 3-year old to go home after just 5 minutes in the park.
- Always, always bring a light jacket when going to the malls. If you don’t and you catch a cold, don’t tell me I did not warn you.
- If you miss winter just go to the Mall of the Emirates or any Carrefour supermarket. Dress up in your winter clothes complete with knitted hat and mittens.
- Always bring headache meds when going out on weekends. Coming in and out of the cold malls from the hot temp outside can make your head spin.
- Water from the cold tap is HOT.
- Never wear lipgloss during sandstorm. Heed this advice, ladies!
- The toilet seat is never cold!!
Off to compile for next month’s post!

nice! so you both have winter and summer everyday! ^-^
dubai is really a very interesting place.
LOL! I have an image in my head of my lips covered in sand.
I have expat friends in Dubai – and their stories about traffic makes my hair stand on end!
I’ve seen tv shows about Dubai – it always seems so incredible.
can’t imagine the “snow” in the dessert! See what money can do— to the Arabs, nothing is really impossible: malls with snow, palm-shaped islands, what’s next? It’s simply amazing…
Just can’t picture out what 45 degrees celsius feels like- don’t you have heat waves? at that temperature, people will be dropping from heatstroke…
Hi G–I like the idea of taking a road one day and it not being there the next (not). And such short playtime at the park (maybe more nap time?).
Sounds like such an … interesting palce (smile).
Hi Grace. I love reading your posts. I just wrote my 6 month update. It’s a bit long…but I guess that’s what happens when I don’t write very often!
I miss my kids being preschoolers……sometimes…..
Where we moved from it would often get up to 40C. It was horrible! I remember the summer I was pregnant with the twins it hit 42C! You just sit near an air conditioner and don’t move!
I hope you’re finding lots to do to keep your daughter busy. One of the things my kids loved at that age was playing with a big bowl full of bubbles. Just fill the kitchen sink with lots of dish soap and water and then scoop the bubbles into a bowl, add a spoon and some kitcheny things and set her at the table, and watch her have fun!
Do you have a playdough recipe? They love playdough. And I used to let me kids paint all the time too. It’s messy but they love to be creative. Oh yah, give her a roll of tape and let her stick it on paper…hours of fun!
Enjoy your summer.
p.s. sorry for the long comment…that’s what happens when I don’t comment very often too! lol
sounds as if driving in pinas is like driving in dubai ..lol..or is it worse here?
ka-nindot ba sa flowers sa babaw. cool tan-awn.
sakto si shie… you can go to one place and experience summer and go to another to experience winter. cool!
lots of interesting stuff in dubai…kalingaw everyday is like an adventure you’ll never know what you find next
belated happy 6th month anniversary in dubai!
just be positive about this friday the 13th and i’m sure, everything will go well perfectly. but of course, a little more precaution won’t hurt (^.^).
we have the same problem with the malls And our restaurants.
Always go out to those with a light jacket!
Wish our road work would move as fast as in Dubai.
Yes, I love the new mall with the Skiing!! As my friend says, it’s a great boyfriend babysitter.
