Insulin resistance is a bitch

My blood test results are back, following that horrible visit to the ob-gyne and it shows I have mild insulin resistance.

From medicinenet.com:

Insulin resistance (IR) is a condition in which the cells of the body become resistant to the effects of insulin, that is, the normal response to a given amount of insulin is reduced. As a result, higher levels of insulin are needed in order for insulin to have its effects. Insulin is an important hormone that has many actions within the body. Most of the actions of insulin are directed at metabolism (control) of carbohydrates (sugars and starches), lipids (fats), and proteins.

In other words, insulin resistance interferes with weight loss efforts. Tsk.

There are several causes of insulin resistance including obesity. While I am overweight, yes but I don’t think I’m that obese (wearing US size 8 jeans). Unless of course, you’d let me stand beside Victoria Beckham.

The other one is genetic factor. Some of our relatives in my mother’s side have Type-2 diabetes and although my mom seems to be ok based on the regular blood sugar check she undergoes, I am very surprised that I am candidate for Type-2 diabetes. It’s really annoying since I’ve eliminated sugar and wheat/gluten and high-carb diet for almost a year now.

It’s tricky: overweight people can develop insulin resistance because of the excess weight BUT, there is reported evidence that insulin resistance actually precedes, and is the ultimate cause of, weight gain in some people (and PCOS in women!).

When I knew that I am in the pre-diabetic stage and have insulin resistance, I asked myself immediately, “should I still go to the gym now?”  What’s the point? All my efforts seem to be one step forward, two steps back. I’ve lost a total of 15 pounds last year by exercise and diet change but looking at the things I do for exercise, it’s a bit fair to say I should’ve lost more than that! My husband says (while grabbing my bum), at least I’m making some progress instead of nothing at all or worse, gaining weight. So with that words, I shall prevail – will continue to work hard on exercise as well as diet to fight the genetic factor. The doctor said my glucose level is borderline of a pre-diabetic so I won’t be taking any medication yet, I’ll be more careful with diet and see.

FYI: A normal fasting blood glucose target range for an individual without diabetes is 70-100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or 3.9-5.6 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). I scored 97. I would’ve been happier if it were my Math grade ten years ago…

Knowledge is power Grace. The more you know about what you’re up against, the better you can fight it.

Hang in there.

Yeah, I’ve been spending lots of time reading medical stuffs these days..it’s depressing. My doctor said, my glucose level isn’t that alarming if only I’m not trying to get pregnant. *sigh*

I’ve stayed away from my comfort food (freshly baked bread!!) and then this blood report? It’s just so unacceptable…

I know it is difficult, but at least you know. Hubby has type 2 diabetes and he should be more careful with his diet, but he is not. It makes me crazy, but what can I do. I have low blood sugar and I also have been playing fast and loose with my diet.
So, your post is making me think that it is time for me to get honest again with my eating.
I’m holding all good thoughts for you!

Ugh, what frustrating news. But don’t give up on the weight loss. Just like your hubby says, it is definitely better to be losing than gaining! And you’re definitely an inspiration! ;) Continuing to do all you can to stay healthy will be the best thing you can do to delay and hopefully prevent getting the diabetes.
