I’m fighting with my thoughts as I write this. It’s either I’m shy to reveal it or that I’m afraid of being jinxed but I’ll tell everyone anyway because it been something I really wanted to do all my life.
I’m planning to participate in the Dubai Marathon 2011 on January 21, 2011*.
There. I feel I just removed a ton of weight on my shoulders. But wait, hold your horses, I will NOT run a full marathon of 42.195 kilometers. I’m not that crazy, YET. In all aspects of life, baby steps right? RIGHT. I’m going to run the 3K fun run.
BIG Laugh.
The thing is, I can do a lot of things, I can even multitask and work better under pressure but one thing I am very incapable to do is RUN. I am slow that if zoombies attack, I swear I’d be the first one to get bitten. Plus, I tire very easily. I like the idea of running, not being out of breath for merely a few meters and man, I envy those running bodies and who wouldn’t want to survive a potential zoombi attack in case it happens?
This has been something I really wanted to do for the longest time so I am finally doing it so I can remove it from my ‘things to do before I die’ list.
I started recording my run times since the beginning of this month, running 3 kilometers three times a week. I started with 28:30 – I don’t know if that is good or bad but all I know is, I walked more than I ran. And my goodness how my legs hurt at night!
The last run I did clocked 26:03 so time-wise, I am improving. My goal is 3 kilometer for 20 minutes or under until the end of November. Can I make it?
* Dubai Marathon registration is now open and will close on 31st December 2010. I’d be happy to see you there!

That’s an awesome plan. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Sadly, I have given up my running habit again – I’m just too lazy, even though I had fun doing it for about a year or so. I definitely needed more time than 26 minutes for 3km, though, so you’re already faster than I ever was even after running (and often walking in between) for almost a year.
thumbs up go go grasya!!!
Too bad i can’t afford to go to Dubai. I would go with you and try to convince you to at least do the 10K. For running inspiration Google Helen Klein. She started running her 50′s and has run 136 ultra marathons, as well as the a couple of Eco challenges the first when she was 72 I think. That was 300 miles of running, climbing, mountaneering etc. with really no sleep. She ran 3 marathons in 3 days for her 82nd Birthday. Also try and get Rosie Swale Pope’s book, she ran around the world, it took her 5 years and 53 pairs of shoes. She was in her late 50′s when she started. Good luck, keep us posted.

You go girl!!! I used to run in high school too… and for 4 years I was the slowest member of the team (by a LOT), but I kept it up. It doesn’t matter how fast you are, what matters is that you do it for yourself. Set mini goals for yourself (like you have!) and keep at it! My knees bother me too much now to run, yoga is more my style, but I’m so glad you’re doing this!
I would love, love, LOVE to register and see you there, however I highly doubt I’ll be able to make it to Dubai by January. LOL
All I can say is good for you Grace! This is such a great thing-I’ve actually had this on my ‘to do’ list for quite some time now, but the difference between us is I’m not sure when I’m going to be able to complete it.
As for your worry, I don’t think you should! You’re doing something you want to do with a goal that you set for yourself. Who cares if you’re not the greatest runner? Just as long as you work towards it, try, and do your best, that’s all that really matters
Good luck!

Go Grace!!! Just take it slowly… I know the feeling, I could barely run 200M before and envy other runners though still I’m not a good runner but running few KM is a big improvement as compared before.
Anyhow, have you registered already? I’ll be taking the fun run also for the moment because I don’t want to spoil my planned Christmas vacation which I already mindset for delicious fatty foods and booze.lol;-) But Inshallah I have my mind set for 10K on 2012;-)

Good luck with your training, I suggest running as much as you can but to estimate the length you run. Then the second day you will push yourself to run the same distance as the one you ran yesterday plus 1k (or if you can’t run that try at least 500m).
Doing this until the marathon starts should make you stronger and those zombies wont got anything on you, you will even be able to do circles around them.
By the way this is a method I applied when I entered the exam to enter the military and it helped me a lot!

i just want to wish you good luck on this one. And may you have the perseverance to continue with your training, and may you not hit that ‘stone wall’ during the marathon.

Keep at it and you will improve. Running is unfortunately one of those activities that you get better at the more you do it. There’s no quick fix other than clocking the mileage an investing in a decent pair of running shoes. Just be careful of injury, pounding the pavement is not good for the joints.
Will be doing the 10k myself, and good luck to you
so awesome! wow! go for it!
cheering on you on this side of the hemisphere! my pompoms are out!
