The High School Meme

20075Oct

by Grace

Everyone loves a little bit of nostalgia, right? I found this meme that I like at Don’t Call Me Mummy and have been itching to answer this right after seeing the title.

This is a little bit long so please don’t sleep on me!

Who was your best friend?
I had several close friends while in high school. While other girls in class would concentrate on reading romance classics like Mills and Boon or Harlequin Series, my close friends and I played cards and games only elementary children would play. We were so shallow, we would laugh all day without any particular reason. Ok, I hope that didn’t give you the impression that I am mental.

What kind of car did you drive?
What car? High school students in my country don’t have cars!

It’s Friday night. Where were you?
I am 100% at home or else I ‘d get a good scolding. Anyway, I don’t have enough finances and guts to go out on a Friday night.

Were you considered a flirt?
If you have seen how I look and acted in high school, this question would be fruitless. Even if I was a flirt, no one would be interested!

Were you in the band, orchestra, or choir?
Not in either. I had no legs to be in the drum and bugle corps (as a baton twirler), no instrument to play for the orchestra and no fab voice to give me the right to join the choir. However, I was active in the military training program of sorts and underwent rigid training every week.

Were you a nerd?
I think not. I was not wearing glasses in high school!

Who was your favorite teacher?
My favorite teacher would be my English teacher who I tease with one close friend, as the teacher who almost became my mother in law (that’s another story altogether). Everyone is terrified of her but I scored a lot of brownie points in her class. She was terrifying to others but inspiring to me. She gives me all the reasons to study harder so that I will not be embarrassed in her class.

What was your school mascot?
I would have volunteered.

Did you go to the Prom?
Yes, because it is compulsory to attend our school’s prom. In fact, our Physical Education grade would depend on how we danced at the prom! My first prom was when I was in 3rd year of high school and 15 years old. We don’t get to choose our partners like the high school movies in Hollywood. 3rd years fall in line according to height side by side with 4th years who also are in line from dwarf to giant. Whoever is compatible to you height-wise is your prom partner. Tough rule, ey?

I did not enjoy the prom. I didn’t have a glitzy dress and my partner spent the last song dancing with someone else. (I was bitter a million years ago but not now, I actually laugh at the way I made it a very big deal in my old diary)

Did you have a job your senior year?
No. I would have loved to but I spent my summer taking care of my younger siblings.

Did you go to school with anyone who is now famous?
Hmmm…I have yet to search or ask my other high school friends.

Did you go to a senior trip?
Yes and it was so memorable. We went to different factories in the neighboring province including an electrical plant that is situated 500 meters below the ground! It was exciting as well as scary. Imagine what would happen if the earth closed in on us? When we ascended to the ground after the tour, I was so happy to see the sun again!

Then we went to a natural spring to have an afternoon dip. It was riot. Everyone was having fun and they forgot that I am not a capable swimmer. Ok, I can’t swim. I was shocked to get in a pool that was 6 feet deep. I almost drowned. Thank God I did not panic and someone grabbed my hair and pulled me up.

Have you gone to a class reunion?
10 years ago we had a sort of class reunion. More than half of my classmates came. It was fun to see the changes in every one of us. The talking can’t seem to end.

I wish we could have a reunion again, now that most of us are already moms and dads. But I guess it would be too difficult since most of us are abroad – - my close friends and I are scattered in 4 different continents. Well, I guess it’s just hard to be all grownups.

You liked this meme, didn’t you? Here’s the fun part: I don’t have to tag anyone!

I know you like to answer these so I’m leaving this open to anyone who would like to reminisce on their high school memories. Just leave a comment if you want to play and I’ll go check out your answers.

The only famous person from my school is Jason Scott Lee – the one who played Bruce Lee and that kid in the Jungle Book. He was a year younger than me.

I do like this MEME! I will give it a go in a day or two.
Also, VERY interesting about the prom! Made me laugh. It would actually take out alot of anxiety about who to ask or who would ask you! Big stuff here!

Were you a nerd?
I think not. I was not wearing glasses in high school!
—-> Hey! I’ve been wearing eyeglasses and I didn’t consider myself a nerd. LOL! Actually, my eyeglasses kind of added more pressure to study more. If you’re wearing eyeglasses, people would assume that you’re genius (and I’m far from being one)… and it would be more embarrassing if I get failing grades. ^0^

I can a hazard a guess that I very well know that English teacher. And ours is a relationship of love-hate kind. At my end at least. But I appreciate the “way” she encouraged me to do good. And I guess I did. Heheh. She was one in my son’s birthday celeb a year ago to show my appreciation for having a teacher like her. And I saw her very recently and we were always spending more time (than what was allowed)sharing “things.”

I have no memories of our third year prom. As you said, we were paired according to height. Unfortunately I was the last in line and the senior boys was one boy less than us girls!… wish we would have a big reunion soon- not when we are all old and gray
