It’s two days before Christmas so what’s up here in Dubai? Practically nothing. Well, aside from the gigantic Christmas trees in the malls and the Christmas carols on the radio, I haven’t really felt the spirit of Christmas. But what is that spirit anyway? After more than 10 years of spending the holidays abroad, in places where there is no Christmas (the Christmas in my standard), I have somehow ‘lost’ some feelings related to it.
But I am not going to write something sad because it’s my daughter’s birthday today! So tonight we’re going to celebrate with a cake she wished for and make her happy. Since Sunday is a working day for me, I ended up waking up at 5 am to prepare food for tonight. I just got things ready and my mom will do the finishing touches later in the afternoon.
Don’t you just hate it when it’s Sunday and your daughter’s birthday and you have to be at work until 6 p.m.? Oh, and that tomorrow the 24th and Christmas day, the 25th is not a holiday? There. So much for saying I am not going to write something sad!

Everything is still vivid in my mind when she celebrated her 3rd birthday in our city. We were all very happy then as all members of our family were present. But this time, I missed my beauteous and very talented first granddaughter. Day Ging, please extend my greetings to her – HAPPY BIRTHDAY PLENCHIN!

When I worked in KSA as a nurse about 4 years ago, I used to request to be on duty on Christmas because I felt miserable staying in the flat with other miserable & homesick people. That was really sad.

Hi Robin,
I’m hoping to do just that. It will all depend on my boss’s mood today or tomorrow. If not, we will go ahead with our plan to have a Christmas party at home on the night of December 27 (Thursday). It’s the usual dayoff on Friday so we need not worry of staying up too late and not waking up for work the next day.
But still…the 27th is not the same as Christmas eve.
Oh, Grace, I wish for you some down time and time to celebrate both your daughter’s birthday and Christmas.

I know what you mean. I moved to Southern California about 10 years ago and I lost that Christmas feeling. It gets a little cooler than usual, but I live in Palm Springs, so the desert is usually warm and pleasant all winter long. I look around at Christmas trees and yard lights and think: what are all these people doing with Christmas decorations up now?
