They are more likely to behave on trips to the store when you give them jobs to do like read and check off your list or pick out things themselves. I once watched a Super Nanny ep where the kids helped make the list, and then were given colorful paper to write the things they can pick themselves in the store to keep in the trolley (like cereal, juice, etc) .
