Pristine in Dubai School
It will still be next year (hopefully) but I might forget it so I’m writing about it now. Next Japan school year, April 2011, we plan to go to Japan for vacation and intend to enroll Pristine in a school there for a month. It would be a great time for her to learn about the language, the culture and possibly develop friendships from boys and girls of her age there. It’s nothing permanent, we’ve heard a lot of Japanese expat families do this so the children can be reconnected to their birth countries.
She’s open to the idea and embraced it with gusto. I’m glad M brought this topic up as I’ve been a little concerned how Pristine would grow up not knowing half of what she is. We came to Dubai when she was still 3 years old and now, after we passed our three year mark in Dubai, it can be told that she has spent more of her life here than there. She speaks the language here, have friends here but have always wanted to understand all about animes, chopsticks, sumo and Japanese literature. I listen to and sing a Japanese song and she tugs my shirt, “I want to learn and sing with you, mom.”
I hope she will enjoy her time and get to know and love Japan like I do.
*Pristine is the one standing in the middle or 4th child from the left and right.

I think that’s a fabulous idea! Where we live you can do immersion school for your kids in Spanish. If I don’t home school I’m seriously considering enrolling Cory in that program.

I think that is an AMAZING idea Grace and it’s wonderful that she wants to do it! If given the chance, I would love to be able to go and learn about the Polish culture and language(I’m more then 50% Polish).

That’s a great idea. That’s the same reason I will go back to the Philippines too this March, to have my child experience the Phil culture and language, otherwise, he/she will only experience the UAE culture and language. hahaha.

i knew right away that she’s the one in the middle before reading the entire post.
she’s half-japanese? well, she should explore that part of her heritage, then. i’m sure she’ll enjoy it, and she’ll find it easy to absorb the language, as young kids are so gifted at doing that.
Yes, my husband is 100% Japanese so our daughter is half-Japanese…she looks like a native Japanese though, I wonder where my genes went!!

Oh, I also want to go to Japan! It’s always been one of my biggest dreams. I love the asian culture, both the music, the books and the food. I hope you’ll have a great time and get lots of inspiration to travel more!

I could tell which child was your beautiful Pristine as soon as I looked at the photo (I think it is adorable that they are all holding hands – what a wonderful sign of friendship across nationalities).
She is so lucky to have a mother as concerned as you are that she learn her heritage. I wish my parents had done that for me. How is she doing with her Japanese writing lessons? I’m sure she is doing fabulously.

I think reconnecting with your own culture is very important. I often fear that migrating to some other country can disconnect your generations from your native land. But your idea is very helpful. Hope pristine will have a good time!
