March 8 is International Women’s Day. The focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation, and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political, and social achievements. Prior to this date, my inbox was filling with offers of pampering and all sorts of self love for women.
I’ve been in chronic pain lately especially in my lower back due to long hours of sitting down at work and an injury a couple of months ago from lifting heavy weight with bad form. So I decided to treat myself last week by going to Saray Spa at Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites for Deep Tissue massage. I’ve read that Deep Tissue massage can be an effective treatment for injured muscles because it facilitates the movement of toxins from the muscles and helps stretch tight or twisted muscle mass. This type of massage can also help promote healing.
Of the many types of massage, deep tissue focuses on the release of muscle tension and chronic knots.
Does the sound of that make you swoon? I realize that as I’ve aged, I prefer massages rather than fancy dinners or dates or even flowers.
I was greeted by the friendly staff at Saray Spa who explained the treatment I was about to receive and gave me a tour of the spa facilities available.
The therapist Liza delved in to exactly where my problem spots are: lower back and stiff shoulders. Honestly, at first, it was not relaxing, if at all, it was a bit painful but gradually the pain was gone as my muscle tensions were eased with her strokes. The pressure used by the masseuse in the deep tissue massage is stronger and my preference really. I slept in no time. (The therapist later on told me I was talking in my sleep…)
By the time my hour’s up I’m surprised I’m truly relaxed and refreshed. It was my first time with a deep tissue massage and now I know I won’t settle for anything else.
Deep tissue massage – where were you all my life?
DINNER AT AZ.U.R.
What’s more perfect after a relaxing spa session than eating your favourite dish afterwards? I’m not talking about chocolates (though I love that stuff) but tender, grilled to perfection Angus rib eye steak. Mmmm, yum.
This is not my first time at AZ.U.R restaurant. We were here SEVEN years ago when Pristine was still turning 5 years old, now we were back with a new member of the family, Benjamin! (It’s hard to take a toddler out for fine dining though…and I never learn my lesson.)
Nevertheless, we had a lovely time. AZ.U.R is a restaurant serving Mediterranean food. So there’s a taste of Spain, Italy, Greece, Morocco and Lebanon. I would suggest you order the steak (last Thursday they had BBQ night with only 99 dhs for a steak of your choice but the sirloin steak, cooked at medium wasn’t so tender, so better make it medium rare or opt for the more fat marbly rib eye steak on the normal menu), the harira soup and for dessert, TIRAMISU. Take my word for it, I wouldn’t go ALL CAPS for nothing.
It’s amazing to think how much time has gone and to see so many buildings from the balcony already completed. You might want to sit in the terrace to enjoy the beautiful night view of Dubai Marina.

HOW TO GET THERE
By Dubai Metro
We got down at DAMAC station and took a taxi to the hotel paying only minimum fare (12 dhs).
It is about 1.3 km from the station so it’s not much of a long walk. However, it was windy with Dubai having a mini sandstorm that day so we took a taxi.
We were guest at Saray Spa and AZ.U.R restaurant at Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel and Suites but all opinions are my own.
