32 Candles, the debut novel of Ernessa T. Carter is a sweet and funny story about a girl dealing with her personal and social issues such as skin color, child abuse and the perpetual question that every woman ask, “Am I beautiful?”. By the time the character, Davidia Jones is six she knows the smell of an alcoholic and the noise of sex. It was a relief reading how Davidia transformed herself into Davie, after leaving home at fifteen and recreating herself.
It mentions the popular 80′s movies Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink, both movies I have seen but having difficulty recalling. Nevertheless, it wasn’t a difficult book. At all! Take my word for it.
From Harper Collins:
Davie—an ugly duckling growing up in small-town Mississippi—is positive her life couldn’t be any worse. She has the meanest mother in the South, possibly the world, and on top of that, she’s pretty sure she’s ugly. Just when she’s resigned herself to her fate, she sees a movie that will change her life—Sixteen Candles. But in her case, life doesn’t imitate art. Tormented endlessly in school with the nickname “Monkey Night,” and hopelessly in unrequited love with a handsome football player, James Farrell, Davie finds that it is bittersweet to dream of Molly Ringwald endings.
I truly loved the book and finished it in one day. 32 Candles is a chick lit (with sexy scenes played out in creative words) mixed with serious prose. The combination of dramatic and comedic plot makes it very hard to put down so do not start reading it at 10 pm!
Sometimes you just come across the author that will blow you away. I highly recommend this book and will likely to read it again. I can’t wait to read more of Ms. Carter’s book in the future.

Lunatic, thanks to my last name being Luna. Since the time I was a small kid, people have called me that. My parents, who coached all my sports teams for the better part of a decade, even named our soccer squad “the Lunatics.” I HATED it; it was a curse. Then, as I grew older, so many people would ask my name and respond “that’s the best last name ever!” when I told them. I started to embrace it–there aren’t a whole lot of Kristin Lunas on the Internet after all–and now my Twitter handle implements that: @LunaticAtLarge!
.-= Camels & Chocolate´s last blog ..Going to the Chapel- The Ceremony =-.
Back home in Germany they used to call me Annette-die-nette (which translates into Annette, the nice one), but here in the states I don’t have a nick-name, I feel slighted! But I also don’t have a middle name, so I guess that takes me out of the competition, does it?
I had won a kit kat giveaway by guessing how many m&ms were in a jar. I went around school giving it to everyone so ppl called me kit kat fairy.
It’s really hard to shorten “Heather” so I never really got a nickname. Sometimes people will shorten it to “Heath” but that’s about it.
As my name is Max but my friend called me maxie not just because of my name the main reason behind it is that i am one of the boy in my group has maximum girl friends and there are many things that i have maximum, thats why my friend called me maxie……….. nice name Right?

My nickname was Kalea. My cousins in Hawaii called me that when I was little because of my blond hair when I was little and it stuck. I still use it now actually.
Looks like a cool book. I was a total 16 Candles fan.

I have many nicknames, thanks to my loving family and friends who loves to call me with a pet name. The nicknames are: Bing, Ebyang, Vhie, and the list will go on.
Anyway, I am a sucker of chick book, chick flick and anything chick-y. I work in an environment that is filled with men so I long for girly anything when I’m not working.
I watched 16 candles and pretty in pink. I used to dream I would be Molly but of course, I am beyond that dreaming stage. Nowadays, it’s not the look that matters anymore, it’s the knowing that you are beautiful inside and that you are making yourself the best that you can be.
Cheers!
My full name is Jacqueline, but I go by Jackie.
Thanks!

Well, my name is Rebecca. And there are a few nicknames that people use for me. Bekki, Bec, Bek, Becca {only my old dance instructor is allowed to call me that!!}….and a most unfortunate one: Reba. Only my mom calls me that {on occasion}…and even then I shudder. My sister calls me Booka. And for no apparent reason, my uncle calls me Daisy…yet I still answer to it. And I don’t think that this counts…by my son calls me Mommy! Oh…and Mommy Bekki if I he can’t get my attention right away! lol
Thanks for the chance.
