What do you do when October ushers in? Some prepare the Halloween costumes, some prepare the good food and good beer!
At JW Marriott’s German flagship restaurant Hofbräuhaus, it’s a month long celebration of good food, drinks and music for Oktoberfest.
The JW Marriott in Deira is special to us – it is very near where I work and when I got my first salary in 2007, we had our first fine dining in Dubai at one of the restaurants in this hotel (Cucina Italian). I remember Pristine, then 3 years old loving the wide courtyard and my husband and I telling ourselves, when he gets the job, we would celebrate it at one of the bars there that serve German food and German beer.
We visited Germany a year before we relocated to Dubai and absolutely fell in love with the place and the food and the beer! (Sorry I always mention the beer – I am not a huge beer drinker but the beers in Germany are one of the best I had so far!)
But somehow, we never got to visit Hofbräuhaus, until last night, after almost 8 years of living in Dubai. What a shame!
But better late than never, Hofbräuhaus is hosting Oktoberfest (Munich Beerfest) which is one of the most famous events in Germany and the world’s largest fair. With some six million people attending every year, it is an important part of Bavarian culture.
Think Disneyland for adults.
The band was just lively.
The atmosphere is electrifying.
We never got to see the real Oktoberfest in Munich but we got a taste of this festival at Hofbräuhaus last night! The cheery staff greeted guests in lederhosen and dirndls and the venue’s décor evokes the cosiness of a family brewery. Round it all off with a live Oktoberfest band, every evening from 8pm onwards, and you’ve got all the makings of a good old-fashioned Oktoberfest!
We sampled some of the Hofbräuhaus Bavarian delicacies that included grandmother’s potato salad, Bavarian beef goulash, veal dumplings in caper sauce and a variety of German sausages, all perfectly paired with freshly baked breads and famous pretzels.
And then this.
I was actually shocked to see this. In Dubai. My apologies to my Muslim readers but roasted whole suckling pig is a delicacy in the Philippines that I love and miss so much.
What a great night we had last night at Hofbräuhaus! If you want to experience Oktoberfest here in Dubai, there’s no other place to go!
Oktoberfest at Hofbräuhaus will go on until the end of October and offers Bavarian buffet every Thursday and Friday priced at AED250 with soft beverages, AED350 with house beverages. The restaurant is authentically German from menu and music to décor and bar has been licensed from the original Hofbräuhaus in Munich.

P.S. In case you’re wondering, I was worried about the condition of my stomach but prayed it would behave so I can eat normal, grown up food after days of clear soups and porridge. Most foods I take triggers bloating and pain. Fortunately, I was feeling so fine last night I was even able to enjoy beer and my favorite German food! I felt alive again!
